Background of the Study

The advent of e-payment systems has revolutionized tax collection processes globally, enhancing transparency, efficiency, and accountability. In Nigeria, the introduction of platforms such as PayDirect aims to simplify tax payments, reduce bureaucratic bottlenecks, and improve revenue collection. PayDirect allows taxpayers to make payments electronically through banks and other authorized agents, ensuring real-time transaction processing and records management.

Despite these advancements, challenges such as network instability, limited taxpayer awareness, and cybersecurity concerns persist, undermining the full potential of e-payment systems. The role of PayDirect in addressing these issues and its overall impact on tax collection efficiency requires detailed examination (Ezeh & Okoro, 2024).

Statement of the Problem

Nigeria's tax collection system has historically been characterized by inefficiencies, including manual processing, corruption, and limited accessibility. While the PayDirect platform offers a modern solution, its adoption and effectiveness remain inconsistent. Issues such as limited internet penetration, taxpayer mistrust in electronic systems, and technical difficulties hinder the platform's ability to fully optimize tax collection (Adebayo & Musa, 2023).

This study evaluates the performance of the PayDirect platform, identifying challenges and opportunities for enhancing its efficiency and taxpayer satisfaction.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the effectiveness of the PayDirect platform in improving tax collection efficiency in Nigeria.
  2. To identify challenges faced by taxpayers and administrators in using the PayDirect system.
  3. To propose strategies for optimizing e-payment systems in Nigerian tax administration.

Research Questions

  1. How effective is the PayDirect platform in enhancing tax collection efficiency in Nigeria?
  2. What challenges are associated with the use of the PayDirect system by taxpayers and administrators?
  3. What strategies can improve the adoption and efficiency of e-payment systems in Nigerian tax collection?

Research Hypotheses

  1. H₀: The PayDirect platform does not significantly improve tax collection efficiency in Nigeria.
  2. H₀: Challenges associated with the PayDirect system do not significantly affect its adoption and performance.
  3. H₀: Proposed strategies do not significantly enhance the effectiveness of e-payment systems in tax collection.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the PayDirect platform's implementation and impact on tax collection in Nigeria from 2020 to 2025. Limitations include reliance on self-reported data from users and regional disparities in internet and technological access.

Definitions of Terms

  • PayDirect: An electronic platform designed to facilitate real-time tax payment and record management in Nigeria.
  • Tax Collection Efficiency: The ability to collect taxes accurately, timely, and cost-effectively.
